We know we need to eat our fruits and vegetables to get the nutrition we need for our bodies to stay in optimal health. However, it can be a lot easier to simply buy a powder, mix up a shake and drink it.
Interestingly, there are a lot of other benefits to these green superfood powders that I didn’t realize until I started drinking them.
Buying a lot of produce can get expensive, especially if you are buying organic. Fruit and vegetables also can go bad before you get around to eating them. This proved to be a big money drain for me.
With a superfood powder, not only could I get products that contain 100% organic ingredients, but many of the superfoods contained were not even available in my local grocery store (ie acai or maca). Furthermore, some ingredients, like wheat grass, require special equipment to prepare, making them even more expensive to eat when purchased individually.
Of course, the shelf life of these powders is significantly longer than that of an apple or a bunch of spinach. I don’t ever run into the problem of superfood powder “expiring” before I get a chance to consume it.
After doing the math, I realized that I was actually saving money buying a green superfood powder than I was buying the comparable amount of fruits, vegetables and probiotics at the store.
I Saved a Ton of Time…
I know that blending a superfood shake would take much less time than preparing a regular meal. What I didn’t think about was the time I would save planning meals or shopping for food – not to mention cleaning up after a meal. These have all been great unexpected bonuses.
More Nutritional Benefits than I Expected…
In addition to the organic factor, I didn’t realize that some superfood powders also contain additional beneficial ingredients like probiotics and fiber that help keep our digestive tract healthy. Some are also made from 100% raw foods. Of course, many of these products are vegan or vegetarian and gluten free, so they easily meet the requirements of several types of diets.
OK, this one is my favorite. Maybe I’m not supposed to say that, but I just did. When I first bought it, I figured that with all of the raw, vegan organic ingredients, including chlorophyll, wheat grass, spirulina, acai and probiotics (among other things) – the last thing I expected was for it to taste good.
Well, when other people say that this green superfood powder has a “rich chocolaty taste”, they’re not kidding.
You can get a larger container size (a commitment) or a smaller (too expensive), but if this is your first try, this 60-serving size is just perfect. You’ll save some money too (comes out to about 50 cents/serving).
If you’re not into chocolate, they have Amazing Grass Berry Flavor with Goji and Acai. They also have High ORAC Green SuperFood with 15,000 ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity) or High Energy Green Superfood Lemon Lime with Matcha and Guayaki Yerba Mate.
Note: although the product labels say that you can mix with plain water, I really recommend milk or juice, or a mixture of half water and half milk/juice. That’s just from my personal experience. The lemon lime can taste a little gritty – but not enough to stop me from buying it again. =)
Organic Wheat Grass Powder
Wheat grass is known as one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. You can buy a fresh miniature shot of wheat grass juice at your local juicing store for about $4-5 or you can buy your own wheat grass juicer and make a mess of your kitchen. And don’t think of eating wheatgrass without juicing it. You won’t be a happy camper.
Knowing all this, organic wheat grass juice powder is a steal at about 50 cents/serving.
You just use a tiny scoop per serving (I’m not kidding, it’s tiny), so you can mix it in with virtually anything and not even realize you’re eating it. Now that’s amazing grass!
Green Vibrance is an amazingly popular green superfood product, with over 400 customer reviews on Amazon.
It is known to act as a natural inflammatory, boost the immune system and keep the digestive tract healthy, among numerous other benefits. Green Vibrance has an extremely high nutrient density, with over 58 certified organic concetrated foods and extracts, plus 18 billion probiotics per serving.
It is more expensive the the other brands, at closer to $1/serving, but the quality is high. I’ve found the best deal price-wise is the 25 oz container size, which is a 60-day supply.
